Introduction

“A Guide to Children’s Literature” is a resource for teachers, families, librarians, and anyone interested in learning about literature for children. It is meant to be an introduction to the purpose of literature for children as well as an overview of the major literary genres. Chapters are organized around the types of literature and tools are provided for further exploration. The content is a collaboration between Virginia Commonwealth University teacher educators, Lisa Cipolletti and Valerie Robnolt, a children’s librarian, Elizabeth Morris, teacher candidates at VCU, and the author of an existing open access resource.
It is our hope that this resource will guide you in your use of literature for children. Endless opportunities await you and the children who will benefit from your knowledge.
